Ganapathy, Professor, Centre for Disaster Mitigation and Management, carried out research projects in the field of Geo hazard assessment. His research project on Earthquake Damage Scenario Analysis for Chennai city Using remote sensing and GIS Techniques is focus on FEMA 154 rapid visual screening methodology, which is modified suiting to Indian conditions, is used for the this study to assess the vulnerability in the built-up areas of the Chennai city, India. This study can be used as first-hand information for the researchers and administrators involved in earthquake emergency planning and decision making for Chennai city. The other recent research project carried out by Dr. Ganapathy is Development of Early Warning System for shallow landslides– Using Rainfall Thresholds. This project is basically an IOT based methodology developed by Dr. Ganapathy to give early warning in The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu by using rainfall thresholds. Dr.Ganapathy created awareness on Disaster Education, Space Applications in Disaster Mitigation and Management to the public and scientific community across the globe, through various lectures and social media for the last 14 Years. Dr. G. P. Ganapathy, for his contribution to the Vellore District Disaster Management Agency (DDMA), has been continuously supporting for monsoon preparedness in the District as well as district level forecasting for rain and Cyclones. He has contributed to preparation of disaster management plans for the district and helping in monitoring and cyclone information dissemination during Nivar Cyclone in Vellore district. Dr. Ganapathy also conducted various training programmes for Government officials of different districts of Tamil Nadu in the field of Disaster Mitigation and Management. He has also conducted many mock drills on Fire safety, Earthquake Safety, Chemical Disasters in and around Vellore District in the Educational Institutions like Schools and Colleges for the last 10 Years and created awareness.
